dear bookworms,

continuing our investigation into the detective world, let's observe some key detective tropes to understand why this genre captivates readers' attention🌟

🗝locked-room mystery
when a crime, usually a murder, takes place in a sealed, seemingly impenetrable location, making it appear physically impossible for the perpetrator to have entered or escaped.

✉️dying message
the written or spoken words of a murder victim just before death.

🤩red herring
a fact, idea, or subject that takes people's attention away from the central point being considered.

🤩unreliable narrator
a character who tells you what is happening in a book or film, but who may not be telling the truth.

♟️foreshadowing
the use of details, description, and mood that will take on more meaning later in a written work.

☕️summation
the part, typically at the end, where the detective reveals how the crime was committed.

to learn more about interesting features of the detective stories, https://forms.gle/oU1zZbTQ7WhCTBAf9 for our tomorrow's meeting 12/09 ☕️

Sylvia Plath once said:
August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.

we were lolling about on the beach, swimming in wild Russian rivers, visiting our hometowns and distant relatives. 🌸

suddenly it’s August again with its vibrant amber and sweet sticky fruit juices running down the fingers, and hands, and under the sleeve.
we pack our bags and fly, and get on the train to sit down, dust our table, open our computers and begin…

a few summer books recommendations for our dear bookworms🌼

🪷A2
Seacrow Island by Astrid Lindgren
A city family rents a cottage on a remote Swedish island for the summer and slowly learns the rhythms of island life, its fishermen, its silences, and its surprises. Told through the eyes of several children and adults at once, the novel captures both the joy and the ache of a summer that cannot last forever.

Waffle Hearts by Maria Parr
Nine-year-old Trille and his neighbour Lena share a summer full of adventures, waffle-eating, and big feelings on a small Norwegian island. A warm and funny story about growing up, loyalty, and what it means to have a true best friend.

The Moomin by Tove Jansson
The Moomin family — round, gentle creatures who live in a cosy valley — set off on curious adventures full of strange characters, wild weather, and quiet magic. Beneath the playful surface, Jansson hides surprisingly deep ideas about freedom, belonging, and the beauty of small things.

🤍B1-B2
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
Esperanza, a young Latina girl, narrates her life in a Chicago neighbourhood through a series of short, poetic vignettes — about her family, neighbours, dreams, and desire to one day leave Mango Street behind. The language is simple and lyrical, each chapter no longer than a page or two, yet the cumulative effect is quietly powerful.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
After a painful divorce, Elizabeth Gilbert spends a year travelling through Italy, India, and Indonesia in search of pleasure, spiritual peace, and a new sense of self. Each country becomes a lens through which she examines identity, faith, and desire with wit, honesty, and considerable literary flair.

The Summer Book by Tove Jansson
An elderly grandmother and her six-year-old granddaughter spend a summer together on a tiny island off the Finnish coast, exploring the rocks, the sea, and each other. The book has no conventional plot — it is a series of quiet episodes, each one a small meditation on life, death, nature, and the strange tenderness between old age and childhood.

👁️C1-C2
Emma by Jane Austin
Emma Woodhouse is clever, rich, and convinced she has a gift for matchmaking — a conviction that leads her to meddle cheerfully in the lives of everyone around her. The novel is Jane Austen's sharpest and most ironic comedy of manners, built around a heroine who is blind to her own feelings while seeing everyone else's with false clarity.

In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros
Izzy and Nate survive a plane crash together as strangers and are pulled in and out of each other's lives over the next ten years — she into politics, he into the military. Their story reaches a breaking point when they are reunited in Afghanistan, where Nate is assigned to protect her.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes
Frances Mayes, a poet and professor, buys a ruined villa in the Tuscan countryside and spends her summers restoring it alongside her partner, learning the rhythms of Italian life through its food, markets, and people. Written with a poet's eye for sensory detail, the memoir is less a travel book than a love letter to beauty, reinvention, and the quiet courage of starting over.

🍋what will it look like?

we will meet 4 times for about 2 hours each in the span of one week in July — on 07.07, 09.07, 11.07 and 13.07 — to read one chapter from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame (4 chapters in total), discuss it and play a multitude of joyful games!

💐what's the purpose of this camp?

it's summer so it is truly high time to rest and relax. and it may also be the time when you could destigmatise reading in a foreign language for yourself. because we'll be exploring such a summer book with such a huge accent on living in synch with nature AND we'll be doing it so leisurely, so gently and with so much enjoyment that there's a high chance reading in english will become your not-so-guilty pleasure, regardless of your current level:)

📎the format is adaptable, it will work for learners of different levels (B1-B2+ recommended)!

the price is 2700 rubles, text https://t.me/underthefern to sign up or ask 💌

🍂🍂Rachel Cusk
🍂🍂 is a British-Canadian writer most famous for her Outline trilogy (Outline, Transit, Kudos).
The books largely consist of an unnamed narrator chronicling the conversations she has with others. Those are described as ‘autobiographical novels’.
🍂🍂🍂
Cusk focuses on female experiences and personal relationships, as well as explores motherhood and divorce in her non-fiction books.

‘Second place’ is a brilliant novel that allows a reader to look inside the darkness of a human soul and its expressions.

https://forms.gle/RrtANJp7bpBQexj47 on the 27th of May to try your strength in translation and reading.

key films linked to Virginia Woolf’s works and life

👁️the hours (2002): based on Michael Cunningham novel, the film displays three women in modern world whose lives are connected to Mrs. Dalloway’s — Virginia Woolf’s character of the eponymous book.

🧇Vita and Virginia (2018): the story of a love affair between Virginia and Vita Sackville-West, a successful novelist at the time. by the way, this romance inspired Woolf’s ‘Orlando’.

🍂also, highly recommend Orlando (1992) with Tilda Swinton. though the film doesn’t exactly follow the plot of the book, be careful!

*who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966): a notable film based on a 1962 play. the title is actually a word play on a song ‘who’s afraid of a big bad wolf?’ from Disney’s ‘three little pigs’. however, it’s not connected to Virginia Woolf in any other way!
