Neil Armstrong’s reply to a believer in the “Moon landing hoax”

For his 70th birthday, Neil Armstrong received a letter from a schoolteacher questioning whether astronauts had really landed on the Moon. I can’t be bothered to translate the whole thing, but it’s classic trolling from today’s Moon-hoax believers—you’ve probably seen plenty of it.

Armstrong first forwarded the letter to NASA, asking whether they were collecting material to debunk claims like these. Then he replied himself:

Mr. Whitman,

Your letter, expressing doubts based on claims made by skeptics and conspiracy theorists, has left me puzzled.

You seem to have been persuaded that the United States government carried out an enormous deception against its own people—and that not one of the 400,000 Americans involved in this supposedly secret project ever broke the silence to expose the fraud.

If you believe that, why are you writing to me, when I’m clearly one of those 400,000 liars?

I’m sure that as a teacher, you’re an educated person. It shouldn’t be difficult for you to contact qualified people who couldn’t have been involved in the alleged conspiracy.

Skeptics claim the Apollo missions never went to the Moon. You could speak with experts in other countries who tracked the missions using their own radar systems—at Jodrell Bank Observatory in England, for example, or with Russian academics.

Contact astronomers at Lick Observatory, who aimed a laser at a retroreflector on the Moon just minutes after I placed it there. If they don’t convince you, get in touch with astronomers at France’s Pic du Midi Observatory. They can tell you about researchers in various countries who still make measurements using those same reflectors. You can ask them, too.

Or you could search online for researchers at university laboratories around the world who study lunar samples brought back by the Apollo missions—some of which have never been found on Earth.

But don’t ask me. I’m clearly under suspicion, and you can’t trust a word I say.

Captured German aircraft were actively used by the Red Army. On seized Junkers, Me-109s, and Stukas, Soviet stars were painted over the swastikas, and the former Luftwaffe planes were sent to fight against Berlin. The Soviet Union was in desperate need of aircraft. In their very first raids, the Nazi invaders managed to destroy over 300 Soviet planes—according to some sources, even dozens of times more.

To master these captured machines, a special brigade from the NIIGVF research institute was deployed. Experts translated manuals, sourced replacements for rare parts, and helped pilots adapt to foreign technology. Even after Field Marshal Paulus’s surrender, Soviet forces captured entire airfields filled with enemy aircraft. Around 40 Junkers were found fully intact, and roughly 300 more were restored to service.

An amusing anecdote...

During his visit to Russia in 1897, Wilhelm, serving as honorary chief of the 85th Vyborg Regiment in St. Petersburg, inspected the troops. After ceremonial honors were rendered, the Kaiser approached the regimental bugler and asked why the unit had been awarded silver trumpets.
"For the capture of Berlin, Your Imperial Majesty!" the bugler barked sharply.
"Well, that won't happen again," replied Wilhelm, slightly embarrassed.
"Impossible to say—depends on the orders of our Imperial Majesty!" the bugler shot back, just as loudly.
The Kaiser silently continued down the line...

The word "ghetto" comes from Italian and means "foundry."

The first ghetto was established in 16th-century Venice, when authorities relocated all Jews to an island in the Cannaregio district, known as Getto Nuovo — "the new foundry" — a site that once housed a metal foundry and was strewn with slag from its production.

In ancient Rus, kalaches were baked in the shape of a castle with a round handle.

Townspeople often bought these bread rings and ate them right on the street, holding onto the handle—or "ruchka." For hygiene reasons, the handle itself wasn’t eaten. Instead, it was given to beggars or tossed to dogs. According to one theory, those who ended up eating even the handle—out of desperation—were said to have reached the ruchka. Even today, the phrase “doyti do ruchki” means to hit rock bottom, to lose all dignity.
