Yesterday, one of my students fell asleep in class. When I asked why, he said he had slept only two hours the night before. I felt guilty. He had also been complaining about the workload, so I thought I might actually be asking too much. In fact, I am conducting 5 additional online sessions a week in the evenings, followed by guided writing and speaking exercises.

Then I checked his screen time:

6 hours a day on Instagram. 3+ hours on movie platforms. Around 10 hours of entertainment every single day.

And yet he goes around telling people how little he sleeps and how much homework he has. 10 hours on entertainment? Are you serious?

This is becoming a dangerous habit: complaining about the consequences of our choices while pretending we had no choice.

Look around. The job market is brutally competitive. Watching successful people on Instagram will not make you successful. Neither will listening to people promising that you can achieve extraordinary results with 1–2 hours of effortless work a day.

And don’t misunderstand me: efficient work is good. Unnecessary work should be eliminated. But there is no shortcut around serious effort.

Even many of those “experts” preaching against hard work worked their asses off to get where they are. They simply know that “you need to work hard” doesn’t sell as well as “I know a shortcut.” They tell what you want to listen just to fill their pockets.

You see many people getting IELTS 8+. But ask yourself: what percentage of all test takers are they? The results are rare because the required level of work is rare.

You can choose comfort. You can choose discipline. You can choose the average. But don’t choose comfort and then complain about the results it produces.

Open your eyes. Look at where your time is going. Your future is being built there. You don’t necessarily need more time. You need to stop lying to yourself about where your time is going.

Many students find it harder to study at university or college than when they were at school.

What are the reasons for this?
How can this problem be solved?

Higher levels of education usually challenge students more than school education does. The reasons for this phenomenon are as diverse as its solutions.

There are two underlying reasons why tertiary education entails more obstacles compared to school education. First, the former puts more pressure on students to excel academically, while the latter offers a more relaxed pattern of learning. This is because university education is believed to directly affect students’ career prospects, as they often apply the knowledge they have learned to their future workplaces; hence, there is a need to enforce a strict and competitive grading system to make students study harder. Furthermore, learners also find it hard to adapt to a new environment, having left their school friends behind. There is no doubt that we usually form an emotional attachment to the people with whom we share the joys and sorrows of our school years. By contrast, new friends at university may be more driven by a sense of competition in order to stand a better chance of securing a well-paid position in a fiercely competitive job market.

Nevertheless, these challenges can be mitigated through several measures. The first solution is for educational institutions to provide more academic support, such as mentoring programs and flexible learning options. This would help students cope with the stress associated with demanding coursework and intensive exam preparation. Secondly, universities should also offer career guidance and internship opportunities, which can ease students’ concerns about employment after graduation and reduce unhealthy competition. Moreover, university officials can further address the issue by organizing more social events and extracurricular activities, which serve to foster a sense of community among students.

All in all, academic pressure and the absence of close-knit friendships at university contribute to students’ struggles with higher education. That said, appropriate support from educational institutions can effectively address these issues.

If you ask me why some students thrive while others struggle, it often comes down to two simple things: focus in class and consistency with homework.

Jokes aside, there’s a deeper issue. Many students today have become mentally absent. They sit in class, they hear the teacher, they even take notes, but their mind is somewhere else entirely. At the same time, there’s an interesting contrast. Some students don’t necessarily do a lot of homework, yet they approach every task with sharp focus and interest. And somehow, they learn faster.

So what’s going on?

Are today’s students overwhelmed with problems? Maybe. But let’s be honest about the kind of problems occupying their minds:
“I broke up with her.”
“Why didn’t my post get enough likes?”
“She didn’t watch my story.”

These so-called problems consume mental space, drain attention, and destroy the ability to concentrate. The real issue is not lack of intelligence or even lack of effort, but it’s fragmented attention.

At the end of the day, success in learning isn’t about doing more, but it’s about being present in what you do.
