While some people believe that small classes create a more effective learning environment, others argue that the number of students in a class is not a decisive factor in language education. In my opinion, although larger classes can still be managed effectively, small classes are generally more conducive to language acquisition.

On the one hand, it is often argued that small classes provide a more optimal environment for language learning due to the greater degree of individual attention students receive. In smaller groups, teachers are able to monitor each learner more closely, identify their weaknesses, and offer more precise correction and feedback. This is particularly crucial in language learning, where speaking practice and immediate error correction play a central role in development. Moreover, students in small classes are typically more engaged, as the reduced number of participants naturally increases their opportunities to speak and interact during lessons. Take private language institutes, for example, where classes are frequently limited to around 8–12 students, allowing learners to participate more consistently in discussions and oral tasks, which often results in faster improvement in fluency and confidence. This shows that small classes can foster a more interactive and supportive setting for language development.

On the other hand, others, including me, believe that class size is not necessarily the defining factor in determining language learning outcomes. Provided that teaching is structured effectively and delivered by competent instructors, even large classes can function efficiently. Teachers can mitigate the challenges of bigger groups by incorporating pair work, group discussions, and technology-based activities to maintain student engagement. In addition, motivated learners are still capable of making substantial progress regardless of class size by engaging in consistent self-study and utilizing external resources such as online platforms and language applications. A case in point is university language programs, where classes are often large, yet many students still achieve a high level of proficiency when they take responsibility for their own learning. This means that pedagogical quality and learner motivation can, to a considerable extent, offset the disadvantages associated with larger classrooms.

In conclusion, although small classes offer clearer guidance and more speaking opportunities, class size in itself is not the sole determinant of success in language learning, as effective teaching and learner commitment can significantly compensate for larger classroom settings.

Nowadays, we are producing more and more rubbish.

Why do you think this is happening? What can governments do to help reduce the amount of rubbish produced?

One key reason behind the growth in waste lies in modern consumer habits. As living standards improve, people tend to buy more goods than they actually need, many of which are designed for short-term use. This means that items are quickly discarded and replaced, rather than repaired or reused. Take fast fashion, for example. Clothes are often worn only a few times before being thrown away, simply because new trends appear so frequently. Over time, this pattern of overconsumption leads to a significant increase in household waste.

Another contributing factor is the excessive use of packaging, especially plastic. Many products today are wrapped in multiple layers for convenience, protection, or marketing purposes. As a result, large amounts of packaging are thrown away immediately after purchase. A case in point is supermarkets, where even basic items such as fruits and vegetables are often packaged in plastic. This demonstrates that unnecessary packaging plays a major role in the growing volume of rubbish.

To reduce waste, governments should introduce stricter regulations on packaging and production.
