1. Is the appearance of a public building as important as its functionality?
I think appearance is important, but functionality should come first. The main purpose of a public building is to serve people efficiently, so it needs to be safe, accessible, and practical. For example, a hospital with a beautiful exterior would be of little value if its rooms were poorly designed or difficult to access. That said, appearance should not be completely overlooked. An attractive building can improve the character of a neighbourhood and create a positive impression on visitors. In my view, the ideal public building should therefore combine practical design with an appealing appearance.

2. Is it worth spending a lot of money on the appearance of a building?

In most cases, I would say no, although some investment in appearance is certainly worthwhile. One reason is that public money and private budgets could often be used more effectively for essential features such as safety, accessibility and energy efficiency. Spending millions on decorative features would be difficult to justify if the building itself is poorly equipped. However, an attractive appearance can have long-term benefits. A well-designed building may become a landmark and even attract tourists or businesses to an area. Therefore, I think money should be spent on high-quality and distinctive design, but excessive spending purely for visual appeal is generally unnecessary.

3. Is it more important for a building to look good on the outside or on the inside?

I would say the inside is more important because that is where people actually spend most of their time. Firstly, interior design directly affects comfort and usability. Good lighting, ventilation, spacious rooms, and sensible layouts can make a building much more pleasant to use. This is particularly important in places such as schools, hospitals and offices. Nevertheless, the exterior still matters because it creates the first impression. An attractive façade can make a building more welcoming and can contribute to the appearance of the surrounding area. So, ideally, both should be considered, but functionality and comfort inside the building should take priority.

4. Why do people like to visit historical places?

People visit historical places mainly because they want to understand the past and experience something different from everyday life. Firstly, historical sites provide a direct connection with previous generations. Instead of simply reading about an event in a textbook, people can see the buildings, objects or locations where history actually unfolded. This can make the past much more vivid and memorable. Another reason is that historical places are often attractive tourist destinations. They may have unique architecture, interesting stories and cultural significance, which makes them enjoyable to explore. For example, visitors can learn about a country’s traditions while also taking photographs and spending time with their family or friends.

5. What types of buildings are popular in your country?

In my country, both modern residential buildings and traditional architectural structures are quite popular. One particularly common type is modern apartment buildings, especially in larger cities. As urban populations grow, these buildings provide relatively affordable accommodation while making efficient use of limited land. At the same time, traditional buildings remain highly valued because of their cultural importance. Historic mosques, madrasas, and other old structures attract both local people and tourists because of their distinctive architecture and historical background. So, I would say the country has a mixture of modern urban architecture and traditional buildings that reflect its cultural heritage.

Some people think that the government should provide assistance to all kinds of artists including painters, musicians and poets. However, other people think that this is a waste of money. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In Japan, the price of bananas stood at approximately $1.90 per kg in 1994 before increasing substantially to a peak of almost $2.90 in the following year. It then fell sharply to well above $2.00 in 1997, but this was followed by a marked increase to $2.30 until 2000. After declining to roughly $1.60 in 2001, the figure recovered steadily, ending the period at about $2.60 per kg, the highest among the four countries.

By contrast, prices in the USA rose from around $0.80 per kg to just over $1.10 per kg between 1994 and 1995 and then remained virtually unchanged at approximately $1.10 kg for the rest of the decade.

France and Germany followed broadly similar trends. French prices stood at around $1.70 per kg, remaining at this level until 1999 before falling to roughly $1.30 per kg in 2000. They then climbed to approximately $1.80 per kg in 2001, temporarily overtaking Japan as the most expensive market, before dropping dramatically to $1.00 per kg in 2003 and recovering to about $1.60 by 2004. Likewise , Germany’s prices fluctuated within a narrower range. Started at just over 1.50 in 1994, the figure fluctuated mildly between 1.50 and around 1.20 until 2001 before declining dropping gradually to well over 1.00 in the final year.
