Trump Claims All Mines Cleared From Strait Of Hormuz

The President threatened to attack Iran if it attempted to place new mines in the waterway

President Donald Trump said that all mines have been removed from the Strait of Hormuz.

“I have just been informed by the United States Navy that all mines have been removed and/or detonated from within the International Waters of the Strait of Hormuz,” the President wrote on Tuesday . “Iran has been notified that any ship or boat placing new mines will be immediately and systematically destroyed. There is a Zero Tolerance policy on mine placement in full force and effect.”

The Strait of Hormuz has become a major issue in efforts to end the Middle East war. Before the conflict, the crucial waterway was treated as international territory, allowing vessels to enter and exit the Persian Gulf freely.

After the US and Israel attacked Iran in February, Tehran seized control of the Strait. Tehran says that ending the war requires the US to recognize the Strait as Iranian and Omani territory. Iran plans to charge a “service fee” to ships transiting the waterway.

US officials claim that the Navy is assisting several tankers in transiting the Strait each day with a fighter jet escort near the Omani coastline. Last week, Washington said that 15 million barrels of oil exited the waterway on a single day. However, tracking agencies have not recorded a substantial number of vessels successfully transiting the Strait.

Pokémon Go players supplied billions of street-level scans to Niantic’s mapping systems. Years later, the technology they helped build is being adapted for drones operating beyond the reach of GPS.

For nine years, Pokémon Go asked its players to go outside and “catch ‘em all.” Millions of children and their parents walked through their cities with cameras raised. Some, chasing in-game rewards, filmed statues, parks, street corners and, in at least one case, the inside of an apartment. Someone else was gathering the results.

In June, Dutch daily Trouw traced how roughly 30 billion player scans helped train Niantic’s mapping systems. Niantic Spatial has since partnered with Vantor, the rebranded Maxar Intelligence and a major US defense contractor, to develop visual positioning for drones and other platforms in GPS-denied areas.

Vantor serves defense and intelligence clients and provides satellite imagery used widely in western reporting on Ukraine and Gaza.

A game largely played by children had helped build technology now being adapted for US military use.

The game designer and media philosopher Ian Bogost saw the mechanism coming. In 2011 he proposed an honest name for the industry of points, badges and engineered rewards: “exploitationware.” Fifteen years later, Pokémon Go offered a striking example of what he meant.

Tehran Announces Discovery Of Massive New Gas Field

The US and Israel have been threatening to hit all of Iran’s power sites, while Tehran vows to collapse the global energy industry if such an attack is launched

Iran said on 23 August that it discovered a new gas field in the country’s waters worth over 200 billion cubic meters, coinciding with US-Israeli threats to attack Iranian energy infrastructure and following the announcement of Washington’s plans for an economic war against Tehran.

“The discovery has added a significant new resource to Iran’s national hydrocarbon reserves following efforts by the oil industry to identify and develop new deposits,” said Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad.

“The field’s recoverable gas reserves are equivalent to enough gas to supply one phase of the South Pars gas field for around 15 years,” he added, referring to the discovered gas as “sweet gas,” which is easily processed and is less corrosive, “reducing development and operating costs.”

Paknejad went on to say that the newly discovered Iranian field held significant volumes of gas condensates.

He said authorities were working quickly and taking “urgent measures” to begin development as soon as possible.
